What Does it Involve?

We get people drumming! In seconds…
We use traditional djembe drums from West Africa, and teach people simple patterns which build to make wonderful and exciting African rhythms - and anyone can do it!
Everyone learns the rhythms in parts, along with traditional ‘breaks’, and we put it all together to give a real feeling of a proper practiced performance.

And we can get people making their own rhythms…
…and singing and dancing too if you like…

What do People Get From It?

On an immediate level, players get a fantastic buzz of achievement as they find themselves playing music as a group, perhaps for the first time in their lives. Then there’s the excitement and energy of letting rip on a big African drum! People relax, smile, laugh and get to know each other differently through the process of drumming together.
It’s a great ice-breaker – the room gets pretty hot…

What About Learning?

The process of working together in this way is an ideal spring board into learning.
Participants are engaging in a process of supporting each other, listening to each other, creating together, taking on individual roles which serve a common goal. They have an opportunity to step out of normal roles and modes of relating, and bring a fresh perspective to the way they habitually interact.
